Updating Cleo (Development)
During the development phase, you’ll receive extension updates as ZIP files. This guide walks you through replacing your old version with the new one.
What You’ll Need
Section titled “What You’ll Need”Before starting, make sure you have:
- The download link we sent you (check your email or Slack)
- Google Chrome open on your computer
- About 5 minutes of time
Step 1: Download the New Version
Section titled “Step 1: Download the New Version”-
Click the download link we sent you.

Wait for the download to finish. You’ll see a file called
Cleo.zipappear:- On Mac: Look in the bottom-left corner of Chrome, or check your Downloads folder
- On Windows: Look in the bottom-left corner of Chrome, or check your Downloads folder

Find where the file downloaded. By default, this is your Downloads folder:
- On Mac: Open Finder → Click “Downloads” in the left sidebar
- On Windows: Open File Explorer → Click “Downloads” in the left sidebar
You should now see a file called Cleo.zip in your Downloads folder.
Step 2: Find Your Current Cleo Folder
Section titled “Step 2: Find Your Current Cleo Folder”Before we can replace the old version, we need to find where it’s installed.

Open Chrome (if it’s not already open).

Go to the extensions page. Type this into the address bar at the top of Chrome:
chrome://extensionsThen press Enter on your keyboard.

Find the Cleo extension on this page. Look for a white card/box that says “Cleo” on it.

Look at the file path shown on the Cleo card. It will say something like:
- Mac example:
/Users/yourname/Desktop/dist - Windows example:
C:\Users\yourname\Desktop\dist
This tells you where your current Cleo folder is located. Write this down or remember it — you’ll need it in the next step.
- Mac example:
Step 3: Delete the Old Cleo Folder
Section titled “Step 3: Delete the Old Cleo Folder”Now we’ll remove the old version to make room for the new one.
On Mac:
Section titled “On Mac:”-
Open Finder (the blue and white smiley face icon in your dock).

Navigate to the location you found in Step 2. For example, if the path was
/Users/yourname/Desktop/dist, go to your Desktop. -
Find the folder called
dist(this is your old Cleo folder). -
Right-click on the
distfolder (or Control-click if you don’t have a right mouse button). -
Click “Move to Trash” from the menu that appears.
On Windows:
Section titled “On Windows:”-
Open File Explorer (the yellow folder icon in your taskbar).

Navigate to the location you found in Step 2. For example, if the path was
C:\Users\yourname\Desktop\dist, go to your Desktop. -
Find the folder called
dist(this is your old Cleo folder). -
Right-click on the
distfolder. -
Click “Delete” from the menu that appears.

Click “Yes” if asked to confirm.
Step 4: Unzip the New Version
Section titled “Step 4: Unzip the New Version”Now we’ll extract the new Cleo files from the ZIP you downloaded.
On Mac:
Section titled “On Mac:”-
Go to your Downloads folder in Finder.

Find the file called
Cleo.zip. -
Double-click on
Cleo.zip. This will automatically unzip it and create a folder calleddist. -
You should now see a new folder called
distin your Downloads folder.
On Windows:
Section titled “On Windows:”-
Go to your Downloads folder in File Explorer.

Find the file called
Cleo.zip. -
Right-click on
Cleo.zip. -
Click “Extract All…” from the menu.

Click “Extract” in the window that appears. (You can leave the destination as-is.)

A new window will open showing the extracted files. You should see a folder called
distinside.
Step 5: Move the New Folder to the Same Location
Section titled “Step 5: Move the New Folder to the Same Location”Now we’ll put the new dist folder in the same place where the old one was.
On Mac:
Section titled “On Mac:”-
In Finder, find the new
distfolder in your Downloads (the one you just unzipped). -
Drag the
distfolder to the location where the old one was. For example, if your old folder was on the Desktop, drag it to your Desktop.Or: Right-click the
distfolder → Click “Copy” → Go to the destination (e.g., Desktop) → Right-click → Click “Paste” -
The
distfolder should now be in the exact same location as before.
On Windows:
Section titled “On Windows:”-
In File Explorer, find the new
distfolder in your Downloads (inside the extracted Cleo folder). -
Right-click on the
distfolder and click “Cut” (or press Ctrl+X). -
Navigate to the location where the old folder was. For example, if it was on your Desktop, go to your Desktop.

Right-click in an empty area and click “Paste” (or press Ctrl+V).

The
distfolder should now be in the exact same location as before.
Step 6: Refresh the Extension in Chrome
Section titled “Step 6: Refresh the Extension in Chrome”Almost done! Now we need to tell Chrome to use the new files.

Go back to Chrome.

Go to the extensions page again. Type this in the address bar:
chrome://extensionsThen press Enter.

Find the Cleo extension card on the page.

Look for the refresh button on the Cleo card. It’s a circular arrow icon (↻) that looks like a reload/refresh symbol.

Click the refresh button.

Wait a few seconds. The extension will reload with the new files.
Step 7: Verify the Update Worked
Section titled “Step 7: Verify the Update Worked”Let’s make sure everything is working correctly.

Click the Cleo icon in Chrome’s toolbar (the row of icons in the top-right corner of Chrome). This opens the Cleo side panel.

Click the Settings icon (it looks like a gear ⚙️) in the Cleo panel.

Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings page to see the version number.

Go to your EHR and open a patient chart to make sure Cleo is capturing data correctly.
If you see the Cleo panel and it’s working normally, you’re all done!
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”I can’t find the Cleo card on the extensions page
Section titled “I can’t find the Cleo card on the extensions page”- Make sure you typed
chrome://extensionscorrectly (no spaces, nowww) - Scroll down — there might be many extensions on the page
- If Cleo isn’t there at all, you may need to reinstall it from scratch (see the Installation guide)
The extension shows an error after refreshing
Section titled “The extension shows an error after refreshing”- Make sure you put the
distfolder in the exact same location as before - Make sure the folder is called
dist(notdist (1)ordist copy) - Try clicking the refresh button again
- If it still doesn’t work, try removing Cleo and re-adding it (see below)
“Extension not found” or Cleo disappeared
Section titled ““Extension not found” or Cleo disappeared”This happens if the folder got moved or deleted. To fix it:
- Go to
chrome://extensions - If you see Cleo with an error, click Remove to remove it
- Click the Load unpacked button
- Navigate to and select your
distfolder - Click Select Folder (Windows) or Open (Mac)
- Sign in to Cleo again with your account
I accidentally put the folder in the wrong place
Section titled “I accidentally put the folder in the wrong place”No problem! Just:
- Find where you accidentally put the
distfolder - Move it (drag and drop, or cut and paste) to the correct location
- Go to
chrome://extensionsand click the refresh button on Cleo
The extension works but shows the old version number
Section titled “The extension works but shows the old version number”- Make sure you deleted the OLD
distfolder before moving the new one - Make sure you unzipped the new
Cleo.zipfile (not using an old one) - Try deleting the folder and repeating Steps 4-6
